This particular Wednesday morning did not start out so well. It was the day after our families Christmas extravaganza, also my sweet husband’s birthday and sadly the day I had to go back to work. My house was in shambles, albeit happy shambles made up of toys, Christmas wrapping paper and leftover baked goods on the counter tops.
My baby girl had been so excited from all the Christmas activity she didn’t go to bed until way late and guess what, the inevitable happened. The 1 am… “Mommy, I need you” early wake up call… So I was up for a few hours settling her down.
There net result was about 4 hours of sleep for me, morning workout plans derailed and the clincher, there was NO COFFEE in the house! That’s right zero, none, zilch. It had been left down at my in-laws from the night before. Forgotten in a house where no one would even use it! Talk about adding insult to injury.
Anyone who knows me will immediately understand that this is not just a minor dilemma. I am a person who literally cannot form sentences without my morning cup of Joe. So after stumbling through our morning routine like a zombie I set off for work completely under caffeinated and in a not so fabulous mood. Okay to be more accurate I was in a total crap mood, no sleep, no coffee, no workout, and my mind was spiraling into the depths of self doubt about all I’m trying to accomplish in business, in life, in everything… Yeah sometimes when I’m that tired I go there… like express lane go there. But I figured hey I’ll swing through Dutch Bros and get my usual… ¼ sweet pumpkin pie latte… mmmm. That would do the trick.
So I’m in the drive thru, thoughts muddled, attitude in the toilet, and I order my drink, start to reach into my wallet and then I realize, NO DEBIT CARD, NO CASH, NO WAY TO PAY! Sh#t!. I had left my card in my cycling jersey the day before.
I looked up at the barista “Alex” and god knows what the expression must have been on my face… agony, pain, panic, all of the above… She sweetly said “Hey, no worries, it happens sometimes. We got you.”
My mind exploded. “Really?” I said “I can come back in the morning and pay for it…” Nope they wouldn’t it hear it. No big deal they said, “We’re happy to help. Hope your morning gets better”
In an instant my mindset was transformed, even before I took that first sip of hot delicious latte. This kind act gave me the 180 degree mindset flip I needed. Ok so I didn’t get my sleep or my workout but that does not mean that entire day has to go to hell in a hand-basket… What does this look like for me you might wonder?… Usually eating my way through the day in sweets, specifically anything covered in chocolate and feeling completely guilty about it later.
Sometimes things are just outside of my control, like sleep, missed workouts, and even lack of caffeine.
But there is plenty I can control. My attitude for one, and my willingness to look for the good in everything. I decided to make the most out of the day right then and there. Hit my water goals, eat well, nourish my body, and ask for help… Something I have always struggled with.
I also needed to pick up all the birthday fixings for my husband’s party on my lunch break but again, no way to pay. Instead of hanging my head and giving up I asked one of my co-workers to spot me some cash for the day and they did, so graciously without question.
Bad day?.. Nah.. just another opportunity to practice being grateful for what I have, who I am and the beautiful people around me! Thank you Dutch Brothers and the Universe for the reminder.
This morning I went back to my new best friends at Dutch Bros (in my mind anyways haha) and expressed my gratitude for their kindness in the best way I could think of, DONUTS! Their reaction of total surprise and joy filled my heart up for the day! I repaid my coworker and gave a thank you card to show my appreciation.
I’m so grateful for this life, for the lessons I have learned and the knowledge that I always have a choice to change my mind, my heart and start my day over.
